Why Are Bright Lights Uncomfortable?

Yazar: Op. Dr. Gökay Günay

Some people feel that their eyes are more uncomfortable than usual in sunny weather, shopping centres, car headlights or strong lighting.

This may be described as:

  • Glare
  • Light sensitivity
  • A sensation of brightness or glare
  • The need to squint

These are common descriptions.

So why do bright lights bother some people more than others?

Is Sensitivity to Light Normal?

Our eyes are highly sensitive organs that can adapt to changes in light.

However, in some situations this sensitivity may increase and a person may become more affected by light in daily life.

Can Dry Eye Cause Light Sensitivity?

Yes.

Dry eye does not cause only burning and stinging.

In some people, it may also cause:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Glare
  • Fluctuations in quality of vision

These symptoms may occur.

Can Cataract Increase This Complaint?

Yes.

As a cataract develops, the way light is distributed inside the eye may change.

For this reason, some people may:

  • Be more uncomfortable in sunlight
  • Experience more glare from headlights
  • Notice reduced night vision

Can It Occur After Laser or Lens Surgery?

Some people may experience sensitivity to light during the early period after surgery.

In many cases, this may be part of the healing and adaptation process.

However, not every complaint has the same cause.

When Is an Examination Recommended?

Assessment may be helpful if:

  • Light sensitivity has begun to affect daily life
  • You experience significant discomfort while driving
  • Stinging or dryness accompanies the symptoms
  • The symptoms have increased noticeably recently

Conclusion

Being uncomfortable in bright light is not always simply normal sensitivity.

Dry eye, cataract and other eye problems may contribute to this complaint.

The aim is therefore not only to see well, but also to achieve comfortable, high-quality vision under different lighting conditions.
