Why Do We See Less Clearly When Driving at Night?
Yazar: Op. Dr. Gökay Günay
Many people see comfortably during the day but notice difficulty when driving at night.
Common complaints include:
- Discomfort from oncoming headlights
- Difficulty seeing road markings
- Noticing signs later
- Images appearing less vivid or less clear
So why do many people see less clearly when driving at night than during the day?
Our Eyes Do Not Work in Exactly the Same Way at Night and During the Day
Night vision is a more demanding task than daytime vision.
This is because the eye has to work with less visual information in low-light environments.
The pupil also becomes larger, which may make some optical imperfections more noticeable.
For this reason, some problems that are not noticeable during the day may feel more pronounced at night.
Why Is Contrast Important?
The problem when driving at night is not simply darkness.
The main issue is often reduced contrast.
Road markings, pedestrians and surrounding objects are seen with lower contrast than during the day.
For this reason, even small changes in contrast sensitivity may have a noticeable effect on night driving.
Can Cataract Affect Night Driving?
Yes.
Even in the early stages of cataract, some people may experience:
- Light scatter
- Glare
- Discomfort from headlights
- Avoiding driving at night
These symptoms may occur.
Sometimes these symptoms may appear before there is an obvious reduction in visual acuity.
Does Ageing Affect Night Vision?
Yes.
As we age, the eye’s ability to use light and perceive contrast may change naturally.
For this reason, many people notice that night driving is no longer as comfortable as it used to be, particularly from their 40s and 50s onwards.
Dry Eye and Refractive Error May Also Play a Role
Night-vision problems do not always mean cataract.
In some people, factors such as:
- Dry eye
- An unsuitable glasses prescription
- Corneal irregularities
may also affect night vision.
For this reason, the cause of the symptoms should be identified through a detailed assessment.
When Should I Have an Eye Examination?
An eye examination may be helpful if the following symptoms have become regular:
- Starting to avoid driving at night
- Significant discomfort from headlights
- Noticing road signs late
- Feeling unsafe while driving
Conclusion
Seeing less clearly when driving at night is not always simply a natural consequence of ageing.
Contrast sensitivity, cataract, dry eye and many other factors can affect night vision.
For this reason, what matters is not only seeing well during the day, but also having safe, comfortable vision under different lighting conditions.
